|RHistory:|N Amsterdam was discovered by Magellan's companion in 1522 and Saint Paul, about 100 km to the south, probably by Portuguese sailors in 1559. Both islands first visited by the Dutch explorer Van Diemen in 1633 and they were annexed by France in 1843.
